If you were at the SHAKE event in Norfolk at the NORVA and just so happened to make your way to the second floor you may have noticed a puzzle on the table. If you didn’t participate in piecing it together or at least stick around to see the end result then here’s the picture (see above). The “Es N’ Dubz” puzzle consisted over 207 pieces and spanned a little over four feet in width. My homie Cam (a member of the SHAKE team and accomplished music artist and producer) gave me the opportunity to be apart of their event. He told me they wanted to create a unique experience for all the socialites and party goers that consisted of more than just drinking and dancing. That sounded like my kind of party. After being thrilled with the way the Kwahp Puzzle came out I decided it’d be dope to have a large painted puzzle for people to piece together at the event. I think this would allow people to meet other people, interact with my art, and create a cool memory. Turns out all that came to be true as I noticed people make their way over to the table . Some stayed there until the end to complete it. Zeke eventually revealed to them that I was the artist and they expressed how much fun it was for them to place it together. It’s rare seeing things happen as I envisioned and this aspect of the evening did.
Our Cerebral Long-sleeve features a visually engaging graphic on the center chest with the “Sky Welkin” script logo beneath it. Friends and prospective customers have asked on numerous occasions, “What is it? What does it mean? I't looks really cool, I just don’t get it” If i’m being completely honest, there’s not really anything to get specifically. This is what I mean in my artist statement when I say “Inquiry” is a staple theme in my work. I like engaging conversations about how things can be interpreted and expressing concepts more than cemented ideas. In another blog post I will discuss my fascination with the Rorschach Test , but to make the whole ‘Transcendence collection’ cohesive i thought it’d be dope to include the rorschach design I whipped up right into the forehead of the silhouette .
How does that communicate Transcendence? I think the rorschach test is not about what you see but HOW you see. To know how someone sees, you have to tap into their thought process somehow. Said, “tapping” into the conscious of another individual is a transcendent process to me. Personally, it seems like the silhouette wants you to grab a hold of the idea of the rorschach design in it’s mind, just as much as the viewer wants to understand it.
Keeping the idea of Transcendence in mind, I wanted to make a graphic that could hopefully make someone re-evaluate reality . I didn’t want to necessarily define reality, but I did want to address it. I came across the quote “Reality is an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” by Albert Einstein. I know our perspectives all change with time and I wanted to merge the sentiment Einstein was expressing with the idea of our perspective “swaying” over a period of time. I felt the best way to do this was to create a graphic that was reminiscent of a pendulum. After all they sway and can be used as a timekeeper. We sleep, then awake, sleep, awake, and so forth until we die. Through this “swaying” of consciousness our realities sway as well. While dreams are not “real”, they did occur. And when we’re conscious we go about making sense of our interactions within society wondering what was “real” (as in what interaction was of substance) and what was an illusion before we hit the hay. Or maybe that’s just me.
While out in London a few weeks ago we met Logic (the model pictured above). He was digging the our spring line and mentioned that he modeled so we figured why not shoot him in his favorite pieces. He chose the” Perspective & Understanding long sleeve. For the Perspective & Understanding long sleeve, the goal was to communicate Transcendence as it relates to our interpretation of our own senses. I thought i’d create an interesting visual to show that I can make sense of the appeal of plants sprouting from a cloud (our billow logo). If we have the right perspective and make an effort to understand the concept, our thoughts can transcend into a new idea or way of thinking. The silhouette of both male and female was to display unity and to be mildly provocative. Like the rorschach design I know this graphic would be open to interpretation and that’s okay too. Leaving a little room for customer’s, viewer’s, and admire’s mind to wonder is a staple theme of mine ”

Back into paint mode again. I’ll do my best to put more behind the scenes pics on the blog.
Our trip and London went by so quick. We hung out with the people that shopped with us and got to explore the city on foot. We primarily hung out in Shoreditch which was where our event was being held. Click on the picture above to see the full selection of pics.
