July 31st. My first solo show. Conjure. Denver.
It's been a long time coming. The lore, the characters, the story, all of it outpacing the chance to actually put it on a wall and let people stand in front of it.
Conjure is a magician's story. A mystic who makes his thoughts appear. His manifested thoughts are clouds that have plants for limbs. These clouds are called WeeBees.
This show is about imagination and wonder as a discipline, not an accident. If I can make this happen, courtesy of DSDI, so can you.
Seldom do we see artists given the freedom to just make what they want. My mystic character, Serling Curious, does precisely that and so am I.
My existence in this gallery is a protest against the status quo.
There's vulnerability in that. Not just in making the work but in campaigning for it. In stepping out from behind the scenes, in front of the lens, in front of the room. BIPOC artists are rarely afforded nuance and can't wait to learn fro this vulnerable endeavor.
