Seeds of Wonder: Creating a Platform Game and Immersive Art Exhibit

Seeds of Wonder: Creating a Platform Game and Immersive Art Exhibit

A few weeks ago, I shared my pitch for the #ImaginationFund by Playbook on Instagram. The application process involves two rounds, and if selected, I’ll get the chance to bring my idea to life. Playbook is choosing 10 creatives, each receiving up to $10,000, to realize their project. My proposal is for a platform game that would double as an interactive art installation and eventually be available for download on Google Play and iOS.

In short, this grant would fund an art show and provide me the chance to create the platform game I've envisioned. I'd finally get to showcase a full body of work with the game and more in a solo exhibit. If I’m awarded the grant, I’m confident I could bring my vision to life without compromising on quality. I’d like to partner with Illegal Pete’s to provide appetizers and work with DSDI on projection mapping, so the game can be experienced on a wall or canvas.

The image above shows a concept for one of my game levels. I have a few more sketches in my sketchbook, though I haven’t been able to scan and digitize them yet because of a sprained elbow from a pickup basketball game. I’ll share those as soon as I heal up. Platform games have been a huge source of inspiration since childhood, fueling the imagination I tap into today. To create something in the spirit of Sonic, Mario, and Streets of Rage would honestly be a dream come true.  The working title of my game is "WeeBees - Seeds of Wonder".  Seeds of Wonder works as an acromyn "SOW", which I think works nicely with the concept I've been conjuring for my story concept.

Although video games aren’t always recognized for their lore, every gamer knows they hold narratives as compelling as any comic, show, or book. In a future post, I’ll dive into this topic—it's called “Transmedia,” I recently learned. Take Pokémon, for instance. That franchise originated from a video game and expanded across multiple platforms. Maybe one day, when my game comes to life, I’ll have the chance to share its story and concept in new ways.
